engine running fault 240 200 1989

i run a 240 volv0 dl estate using an b230k engine.
Originally the unit had egr fitted, and pulsair.these were removed before i got the car.The engine despite my best attempts to solve it the engine refuses to behave.Sometimes power and then lumpy hesitant and very poor driving.
I have checked all the usual things.
Ignition checks out on analyazer, a bendix fully electronic system.
The carb is now an su (brand new kit)
The tank and fuel lines are fine.Could the problem lie with some aspect of the pulsair or egr being removed.
Any ideas
