How To Tell If An AC Has Been Converted To R134a?

I am looking around at 1980s Volvos and would like to know how to tell, from sight, if an AC has been converted to accept R134a? I have noticed some sellers tell me all sorts of stories and I would like to be able to observe the truth for myself.
