Fitting Front Bumper Trim 200 1985

My son ran the 245 into an earth embankment at very low speed. No real damage, but the front bumper flexed a little and popped off the corner trim. Two of the little spring clips were missing, which I got from the dealer and replaced in the plastic holders on the fender. Problem is that with the bumper correctly mounted, there appears not to be enough room to between the bottom of the trim and the top of the bumper to shove the trim all the way onto the clips. Yet the tooth marks on the trim from the previous mounting show it was fully down. Anyone dealt with this before? Thanks!
