Blowing black smoke! 700

Looked at the FAQ and found some possible anwsers... but I wanted to ask for advice here as well. Just got done with a 200 mile trip and during the trip I noticed that when the turbo needle gets to about 12 or 1 o'clock the car feels like it is fighting to accelerate. Once the needle gets to 3 o'clock it gets better. This is been happening for a little while now. The new thing which occured today was the blowing of black smoke from the exhaust at WOT. About 100 miles into the trip the turbo started to puff black smoke at WOT and the turbo seemed to perform better. Bad turbo or bad hoses? What do you guys/gals think? The turbo has 156,000k miles on it. At the moment I am leaning towards a bad hose but I could be wrong.
