A/C conversion 200 1982

Had my inspection done today, passed as usual for the 12 years I have had the car. Discussed with my mechanic changing to R-134a as I am sick & tired of being taken to the cleaners every time I need an annual recharge or two. He says he can do it for about $300 but he does not use the Volvo kit.from what I understand he esentially sucks out the R-12 & cleans out the system, replaces the O-rings, receiver drier, valve, oil & puts in R-134a. Is it really necessary to use the Volvo kit for my '82 240 or can I get along without it? What is your experience? Once I have it done I can just go to Strauss & get the $15 charge bottle if I ever need to recharge.
