Backfire on start up 200 1993

A new symptom has 'popped' up within the last week and I need the board's sage advice- When my 240 is completely cold, and I start it, it backfires with a 'thump' in the exhaust manifold. The only thing I have changed recently has been the airfilter (the old was was very dirty and led to a rough idle). Any ideas? Thanks!
