Engine noise....piston slap? 200 1988

When my engine (B230F) is cold, it makes a faint noise that sounds a little like valve tapping, but the sound is deeper in pitch. When it warms up the sound goes away. Is this piston slap? Or can it be something else?

And if it is piston slap, is that a terrible thing that means the end is near, or just something minor that won't really limit the life of the engine?
