need help identifying a clunking sound 200 1988

I just became the proud owner of an 88 volvo 240dl station wagon, YEAH! I love it and I am wanting to fix it up to prime. My first thing to fix is the cause of a clunking sound. It is a soft clunk and it occurs when I turn left or right and when I stop. I can sometimes feel it through the steering wheel. Any suggestions on what to look for to figure out this problem so I can fix it before it becomes worse? Thanks.
