03-70L Auto. Trans. Torque Converter Slotted Shaft 700 1990

I'm curious why the shaft on the torque converter that goes into the transmission is slotted on both sides of the end of the shaft. Is it the lockup maybe? Also, I wouldn't think it would make any difference on alignment of the torque converter shaft and transmission, but would like to know for sure. Thanks.
