Cruise control question 200 1988

When you bought a '88 240DL, was cruise control a standard option? The reason I ask is that I have the switch on the turn signal for cruise control, but the wiring goes back behind the dashboard and just ends at the four-prong connector. It doesn't plug into any control unit, and I can't see any control unit anywhere behind the instrument panel that it could plug into. It makes me wonder if perhaps this car didn't come with the cruise control option. But if that is the case, why would I have the switch for it? I can't imagine why a previous owner would have removed the control unit completely from the car, it's not like he was using it for a parts car or anything.

Is it possible that I'm just not seeing the control unit? It's supposed to be behind the dash under the instrument panel, right?
