Swapping over to R134 - how difficult ?? 700 1992

My air is not that strong in my 745T, so rather than just add freon - I would like to change over to R134.

My bro in law said he did this by just opening up the valve, letting the old out, and adding three cans of R134. I thought a vac had to be pulled.

Any advice??
