AC working again- broken solder joint on climate control board 700 1991

The AC started working intermittently on our 745t and finally quit. A hot wire to the compressor resulted in the compressor kicking on and cooling.

The FAQ's suggested that the climate control circuit could have a broken solder joint. The circuit board has an integral relay and it was noted as a weak design in its attachment. Sure enough when I got the board out the broken joint was associated with the relay. A quick resolder of that joint resulted in the AC working once again. List for this part is $400+.

Getting the control assembly out of the dash requires that you remove the radio and its surrounding plastic box (at least in the 91 700). There is a screw at the top back of the box that allows the box to be removed. This reveals a bracket that is held in place by four bolts (10mm heads). Once the braket is removed the control assembly can be removed (seems like a dumb design). I also had the ashtray, cigarette lighter and storage compartment out, but that may have been overkill in my hunt for a method to get the assembly past the tabs on the bracket.

The image shows the broken joint and some evidence of heat buildup.
