what does this tube do? 200

Hi all! 1981 242DL B21F with the getting weirder history...
Last ya'll saw of me I installed a manual switch on my fifth injector. It was running choppy, even before that, so one day i tore it down to check the fuel distribution unit (which had been suggested here as a possible cause). Everything looks ok, but i accidentally tore loose a tube while putting it back together (it's hard to wrassle the intake manifold alone) (and all those tubes and wires) (who made this up?)...
Tube in question comes off the underside of the air flow sensor plate, hooks to something near the firewall, about an inch in diameter, a royal bitch to hook up without tearing it apart again... What is it? Do i have to hook it back up? is it just a crud draining tube (which is what it looks like)? Would lack of it make the car idle ok, but have no power to run?
For those who are keeping track and/or are amused by the chaos me and this car generate, the "small oil or water leak into the cylinders" seems to have been fixed by tightening the head bolts, i think the gasket had gotten dried up and was leaking. I got 1/3 to 1 full turn on each of the head bolts. That could be an issue :) No ether required to start it now. Got the VW bus ready to tear apart next...yay.
Thanks for help!
Delphine
