shifter lock auto question 700

I had my shifter lock, (button on top) pop out. Shaft and all.

Car is 1990 740 with the aw70, I think. The shifter still moves okay, I have left the button and shaft in the hole, and it still goes in and out of Park when I depress button. It's sticking up about 3/4 inch from where it's supposed to be!

I'm worried about what might happen. Is there a piece down there waiting to lock up my shifter?

Any comments, suggestions.
