Oily flame trap 900 1996

My 960 has been using oil (Mobil 1 5-30w) like crazy recently, about 1/2qt every 400 miles. After a little research on the archives, I started by checking the flame trap. To my surprise, the inside of the flame trap housing was soaked with oil, clean engine oil. The flame trap, replaced about 5000 miles ago, was in very good shape. I found suction from the tiny tube connected to the flame trap housing. But I could not feel air pushing up from the air hose. Besides, there was no engine idle speed change, if I plugged or unplugged the hose. I would appreciate any suggestions to diagnose the problem.
