Front wheel bearing replacement 140-160 1974

OK,I just got both the Haynes and Clymer manuals. For the wheel bearing replacement, they are packed with special Volvo tools. I think I can get by without most of them. The main concern I have, is how to remove the bearing races without special tools. Has anybody done this and can share their experience? I'd appreciate it.
I was thinking about making a special tool for the races using a fender washer that is cut off to a rectangular shape, and install it on a long bolt. Sounds doable?
