dash indicators and gauge illumination lights have gone ape 200 1983

I just replaced the light switch in my 83 244DL, and now i've run into and annoying problem with the interior lights. i'm sure the new switch isnt my problem, but i think i must have bumped or cut something else when i was installing it because now my dash lights are totally funky.

for instance, when the headlights are on the dash lights like the OD light, the turn signal indicators, and the brights indicator light all come on, and actually go off when i activate that respective component. so at night the gauge illumination lights dont come on and all i can see is those other indicators. i was able to remedy the problem by jiggling cables under the dash, and in particular it seemed to be related to the bulb failure warning sensor, but when i took that out it did the same exact thing. so i dont know if that means that thats where the problem is, or isnt. but now i cant get it to go back to normal at all.

also, one time when i was able to get it back to what i thought was normal, the right-side running lights went out. i jiggled the cords and got them back on, but now the dash is back to weird, and the right-front turn signal still doesnt work... one more thing, when i turn the dash light dimmer switch all the way down it seems to correct the problem with the indicator lights, they all function normally, but then at night i still cant see any of my gauges, and turning the dimmer back up just illuminates the indicators all wacky again. so anyway, any help is appriciated.
