overdrive troubles 200 1988

Greetings,

I've been scouring the board looking for something similar to my exact problem, to no avail. I have an 88 240dl. Here's what's going on, a little while ago my overdrive started acting peculiar. I would be driving and the car would seemingly shut off overdrive at random. The light would come on, the car would shift down, and I'd have to drop to about 40mph. Using the switch on the shifter would do nothing. Eventually the light would go out, and all would be well. Now it seems overdrive is just totally gone. There is no sign of the light, but it will not shift up into the highest gear. Obviously I'm not very auto-savvy, so I will not be attempting to fix this myself, but I just wanted to see if anyone could give me a clue about what may be wrong. Many thanks.
