960 air pump system failure 900 1997

Recent trip to mechanic to check "check engine" light has revealed an "air pump system failure." Mechanic said could approach $1,500 to fix. Any thoughts on a less expensive alternative? Car still runs great, so I don't understand how there could be a problem. If you have experienced a similar problem, please let me know how you were able to resolve.
