'88 240 Wagon A/C restoration

I have the same concerns(as jkordzi)and desire to undestand the basics before attempting to tackle this job. In my case, my ac has not been working for a few years and I want to ressurect and convert to r34. My dim-witted brother (blind leading the blind)and I spent a day replacing scrader valves, evacuator, and such with no progress. He has equipment that I suspect was not working properly(he's a AC/refrig school dropout)and the day I spent with him did more harm than good in my quest to understand A/C.

It doesn't sound like rocket science, but then again a day with my brother produces irrepairable cognitive effect (I might have brain damage). So, if you have the time could you give me the simple step by step process. From what I've read, I'm confident that I can (with some help) figure this out and get cool.

Thanks
Jim
