Timing Belt/Oil Leak 700 1988

Today I went to go get my oil change and I got some alarming news.....there is oil leaking from the timing belt shaft!!! The guy told me that it is probably cause the timing belt is going bad and needs to be replaced. But I recently bought the car last Saturday and the person who sold it to me said that the timing belt was in good shape (I trust his judgement cause he is a Volvo mechanic as well). The one thing I also did was replace the ring inside of the oil cap that was cracked in one spot so that oil would stop leaking there. My roommate said that when I did that, it may have caused a valve to break when the air was no longer escaping from the oil shaft. Now I duuno if this a problem yet, but I wanna know if there might be other possiblities that could have caused this before I go and spend $300 to replace a timing belt that is still in good condition. (This is what happens when you get a car illitarate person in a Volvo that needs work......PLEASE HELP ME!!)
