knocking in front of engine with loss of power 700 1987

I was driving up the mountains and all of a sudden I heard a knocking sound and lost all power from the engine. I limped up to a gas station to safely park. My question is that when I idle it is ok with no knocking or clicking sound but as soon as I put the car in Drive the idle becomes very rough and then when I drive forward it starts this knocking sound. Any idea's? I haven't overheated the engine in the 1.5 years I have owned it so I don't think it is the head gasket. I could be wrong though. Please help.
