Differential oil plug 200

I checked the differential oil today. Apart from an oil sweat around the pinion seal, I also have a small leak at the fill plug. The leaks must be insignificant though, as the level was fine. What intrigued me though, was that before I removed the fill plug, about 3 mm of the threads were visible. And when putting the plug back, I was not able to screw it further in than it was (I had cleaned and checked the plug threads, they were okay).

Is it supposed to be like this? Or can the internal threads be damaged, which could explain the small leak/sweat? And if they are indeed damaged, how can I fix this? If I use a threading die, I fear ending up with metal filings in my differential.

Any comments will be very welcome.

Erling.
