Driving normal then suddenly it STALLS!!! HELP!! 200

Hi,
I have a 1985 245ti, andI'm starting to loose faith in my Volvo's reliability. Today I was driving my car home from work and it stalled half way there. I came up to a stop light and stopped. When the light turned green again I stepped on the gas only to notice the engine wasn't on. I try to start it, but it doesn't start. I have not been able to get it started yet. This destroyed the terrible day I was already having. I have noticed that the car's Evaporative Emission Control system has been acting up. Right before the car died their was a strong gas smell coming from the engine. I have traced the smell to the charcoal canister in the front of the car. I'm pretty sure the ignition system is in good condition because I have new spark plugs and wires. I'm not sure if the fuel system is working correctly. I have been having trouble starting the car when the engine is cold. I don't know if the problems are related.

I'm wondering if the car just vapor locked. I'm pretty sure the EEC system is not working correctly and it seems similar to my firend's vapor locking Volvo. I replaced the intank fuel pump last summer. The car has never done anything like this before. What should I check and could this EEC problem be related to vapor locking? Thanks in advance.
