My '85 240 DL isn't cooling. Was OK last season, but despite using the A/C occasionally during the winter, it didn't survive. I can see the bubbles coming through the sightglass when it's attempting to cool -- good sign, I guess. I assume that other stuff is OK, but I've lost refrigerant (last recharge was more than 5 yrs ago, so not so bad).

To be environmentally responsible, and because I probably need to eventually
do it anyway, I'm thinking this may be the time to switch from R12 to R134a.

Any idea of current prices to have this done professionally?

I'd rather do as much myself as I can. If I get the retrofit kit from fcpgroton ($220), what am I in for? I've seen some details for 700 series, but not 200 series. So, here's my question list:

1) What tools do I need, beyond wrenches?
2) Can I do all the assembly stuff, and have someone else do the required R12 recovery, evacuation, and recharging? (I've got no vacuum or compressed air equipt)
3) What other questions should I be asking?

The anticipated cost of having a dealer or other garage do this is highly motivating, but I'd like to be sure this is something I can handle before I commit to it.
