Changing heater return pipe (bypass tube) after water pump installed, B230FT, Thanks 700 1986

Is it possible? Car is in shop now, and they claim they can't complete water pump installation with out new return pipe? They say it is rotted and I have not seen it yet, being sunday and all. Thanks for any responses, Chris
