240 A/C Help! 200 1990

I am a relatively new home mechanic, not terribly clumsy or inept, just inexperienced and slow. I follow instructions well - but don't have gages, air compressor, or sophisticated A/C tools. I have a 1990 245 in pristine condition bought recently, and want to keep it pristine. My A/C (an original R12 system) does not cool, shows muddy liquid in the sight glass when operating - no bubbles. Took it to a Volvo dealer and a Goodyear store both. Here is what was recommended - both places priced it at about $1,400!
- New compressor & clutch assembly
- New drier
- New o-ring on condensor
- New high side pressure hose
Bottom line, both shops say the system has leaks, they cannot legally charge an R12 system that leaks. I have read many things about conversion kits, everything from cheap $35 134A kits at Autozone that supposedly work great, to recommendations to use "Freeze 12", to advice to get the OEM Volvo conversion kit to stay within proper specs. I am thoroughly confused. Can I do a conversion cheap myself with a parts store kit? Do I have much to lose by trying? If the system leaks, is conversion to R134 even possible without major repairs? i.e., can typical leaks deplete system that fast? Should I give up and get a shop to repair or convert the system? Please help advise me, thanks!
