timing belt & performance 200 1991

I finally had the timing belt changed on my car. The mechanic also changed two of the drive belts. The car seems to run better and have more pickup (if that's possible). The gas mileage has also slightly improved from ~ 23/24 mpg to 25/26 mpg. It this my imagination or can changing the timing belt and other belts improve performance?
