Black foam in A/C vents 900 1992

There is this oily sticky black foam blowing out of our A/C vents in our 1992 940 turbo. The only way to get it out for me was to close all vents but 1 of them them and use a slim screwdriver to break up the foam so that it will blow out. It is some nasty stuff that sticks to everything. What is it and is it an indication of a serious problem?
