A/C system, where to start? 200 1988

The A/C in my '88 240DL has never worked since we got it a couple years ago. The blower works fine and it seems that the air might be slighter cooler than the outside air, but it's really not worth turning on. So what are the issues that I need to think about when considering repairing the system, like the coolant type and so forth? Are there things I can check out myself before I take it in to get the coolant recharged?
