Swollen Mushroom seal? 700

I'm trying to replace the leaking mushroom seal on my 86 740T. Unfortunately after 5 tries the new one is still leaking. Then I compared the old one with the new. The new one is much smaller than the old, so much so that it will fit inside the old one. I'm wondering if the dealer gave me the wrong part, but the part numbers of the two seals are the same except for a "16" vs. "17" that I presume is mold number not p/n. The old one won't fit back in its groove, so it seems like it grew since I replaced the pump.

Anyone had experience with RTV red making rubber swell? What about the new one? Any tips besides a hammer handle to push the pump up while tightening the bolts? Lube with grease? stick with the rtv red? some other color?
