In-tank fuel filter sock replacement 900 1992

I have a '92 965 with 180K miles. I'm about to do the 180K mile service. The in-tank fuel filter sock has never been replaced. Is this a maintenance item? Or should I just wait until the in-tank pump fails? It's a PITA to replace, especially on a wagon, so if they rarely gunk up...I'd rather not worry about it.
