960 transmission flush question + thermostat 900

I'm in the middle of changing the transmission fluid on my 94 965. First of all I would recomend that everybody change that flud regularly. I decided to change it initally just because the car has 84K miles and i figured it was time. But whenever I checked the level on the dip stick, it looked perfectly red. Only when I opened the drain plug yesterday did I realize how black the fluid really is.
The plan was to follow the flushing instructions in the FAQ. I put the car up on a ramp and opened the drain plug. I came back to it after a few hours and realized I had already drained about 4 quarts and it was still dripping. I let it sit over night. This morning I have another quart and a half, and its still dripping.
Is there any danger in letting most of the fluid drain out as opposed to flushing it out?
My engine was running cold so replaced the thermostat. The thermostat FCPgroton had for the 960 opens at 90'C. But for the 850 they offered both a 90'C and 87'C. I installed the 87'C thermostat in my 960. I figured it is more suited to southern California weather. Any thoughts on this?
