760 Brake booster vacuumn pump 700 1987

Folks
Just curious whether the brake booster vacuumn pump on a B28F engine (K jet but with later heads, CIS, O2 sensor etc) is absolutely neccessary. Mine is utterly ruined and rather than replace it with either (a) a used one which will probably be on its last legs or (b)a new one, which I'd probably have to sell the house to afford, I was wondering whether anyone here has tried using just the intake vacuumn instead and whether it is sufficient? Also is the air flow into the intake manifold from the booster when the brakes are applied likely to mess with the O2 sensor, ecu, etc and cause engine running problems?
Thanks.
