Distributor won't fit 700 1990

I am replacing the head on my 90 744ti do to a blown head gasket. I was attempting to install the distributor prior to putting the head back on and I am not able to make it fit. It goes in as far as the large o-ring but no farther. It is aligned properly and I have tried tapping with a small ball pin hammer and block of wood but to no avail. I have also lubricated the o-rings and metal surfaces.
