1990 240DL dies on cold start 200 1990

The car is a 1990 240DL u.s. spec with 180k miles. When starting with a cold engine, the car will start up fine but will immediately die if you don't rev it a bit. This lasts for a few minutes until the engine gets warm, after that it runs great.

Any ideas on where to start or what to check?
