760 vs 850 advice 700

You may have read about my recent 760 turbo wagon (188k) trouble and what I think is an insane amount of repair work. But maybe it isn't for this type car, I don't know. Short version: When I got this car from my brother, all I heard him talk about and warn me about was the turbo, the turbo and the turbo. Well, that and the transmission (knock on wood) is about the only thing I have not repaired or replaced on this car.
The body is sound, paint is nice, it does look good. And when it runs, it runs great!
We do as much as we can ourselves, but the parts and what it's gone to shop for is approaching $2000 total. I've had the car 3 or 4 months and I really don't think I've had more than a two- week stretch where something has not gone wrong. I enjoy working on cars, I had to learn how ('76 Pacer, '83 Cavaleir, '78 1/2 RX-7) but I have my limits. Is this normal for a Volvo? Or just unfortunate timing? Murphy's Law? Could it be one of the few lemons? Am I catching up for a lot of past due routine maint?
I looked at a 1997 850 wagon (non-turbo) all the papers. It drove pretty sweet and looked nice. But I just don't know whether to ride out the 760 or get out and try something more current.

Help and advice would be appreciated.
Thanks
Philip
