Overheating 200 1980

Suddenly my 1980 242DL began to overheat. The needle on the temperature gauge is normally at the lower part of the "N" on the temperature gauge. Today, it was 80% of the way toward the top, just below the red mark. I checked the oil and coolant levels and quality (ok), upper radiator hose (warm), and fan (works). Turning the heater to full blast did not change the needle's level.
