ZF22 rebuild???? 700

I was wondering if anybody out there has rebuilt a ZF22 tranny? I was wondering if it is worth the time and effort? My 86 740 doesn't shift properly, it shifts too soon. Iv'e tried adjusting the cable and it is no help. There is 160,000 miles on the tranny.
