Head gasket question for 244 turbo. 200 1982

My brother has an '82 244 turbo that is blowing white smoke. How hard is it to replace a head gasket on one of these if it is actually the head? Puzzling though, he says the oil looks normal. No sign of water (no white, foaminess)in the oil. Anyone out there had this problem before or have any idea as to what it might be?
