question on timing belt changing 700 1989

hi,
i just finished changing the timing belt on my 1989 760ti wagon with 300K on it. when i started it up, it sounded perfect, in fact, better then it did before. but when i drive, it seems to be knocking a lot more than it previously did. i'm gonna align the crankshaft with the 0 degree mark, and take off the top timing cover to see if the mark matches up, but i know i didn't get the intermediate shaft right on with the mark. is it important? i think i remember reading it was for turning the oil pump, so i wasn't that concerned. my knock sensor is bad, i know that, and i did have a LOT of knocking before, but now it seems to have doubled.

thanks for any thoughts,
di_rosa
