Performance loss 700

I have an 86 740 non turbo 156,000 miles and I was wondering how much performance loss is normal when running the A/C? It seems mine has almost a 35% performance loss with the A/C running. I really have to get on the gas to get the car going in traffic. I used to own an 88 turbo wagon that would blow this car out of the water. Are these cars just really weak when it comes to running the A/C?
