Silly question about tranny 200 1979

Hi All, I hope all is well with everyone. I have a slightly sick brick. My silly question is: Can a transmission slide towards the rear of the car? Probably sounds like a dumb question if thats not possible..Here are the symptoms. Tranny started slipping out of fourth gear, usually when going down a hill or when I let off the gas. Gear shift boot ripped, I replaced it, it ripped again in the same spot.(on the front left fastener hole, the fastener nearest to reverse) Now I get a clunking noise that seems to be coming from about a foot in front of my gear shifter, underneath my car. My half-baked theroy is that if the tranny was slipping towards the rear of the car, it would have caused the gear shift boot to strech,(boot pretty streched when in second and fourth), popping it out of fourth, and eventually ripping, twice. I was thinking that would explain the clunking of the tranny (I am guessing tranny) when I turn the car off, if the tranny slipped slightly to the rear, into a tighter space, causing it to clunk against the hump that the gearshifter sits upon?..does this make any sense, or should I stop getting half-baked before I try to figure out things I know nothing about? I love this car more than I loved my new BMX on Christmas morning when I was 8 years old, twenty years ago. Any suggestions would be grately appricated, What else could cause this? The OD isn't turning off either, but in my corupt thought process, I feel like this isn't related to the above problem. Thanks guys and gals....Franco79 245dl 215,300........................................................................
