Sometimes my 240 won't start 200 1988

Hi,
I am new to this forum, and as well I am a new owner of a 1988 240GL wagon. I am a student at MIT and got the volvo from a friend for the summer.

It has been working fine since i tuned it up and replaced a few small parts. However a couple times I experienced a problem where I'd get back to my car after work or whenever and it would start, run for a second then die. Then i could crank it all day and it wouldn't start. Then it'd start a couple of minutes later and work fine.

Then yesterday I got out of the gym and it took about a half hour before it started this time. When i got home, i shut it down. Ever since I have not been able to get it to run. Sometimes it'll run for one second, the rest of the time it just cranks over but won't fire up.

I figure it has to be either fuel or electrical.

--when i jumper fuse 4 to 6 i hear a pump whinning. which one is it? When i crawl under, it sounds like the main one.

--the pump relay appears to be okay

--timing belt is fine

--I opened the fuel rail and it had fuel in it, granted i do not know if it was under pressure

--i tried starting it without the AMM connected and it did nothing

How do I use the diagnosis box in the engine compartement? Never used this before.
I'm at a loss. Please help, I really need to be able to drive to work on Monday!

-Jason
