Euro/other headlights 200 1989

Coming home from work today in the rain, I noticed that the bulb warning light was on. When I got home, I discovered that the driver's side headlight was out (it wasn't dark enough yet to tell before then). I told my dad and he said that we'll have to get that fixed (probably on Monday or Tuesday). The normal plan of action would be either to do it ourselves or to take it to the shop for the day and let them handle it (hey, it's not my money). However, I know that Volvo lights are really bad and I was thinking that this might be the time to fix that problem.

I'm not looking to do major reworking on the headlights. I just want to make them a little brighter, but I want to get some quality parts in there, not just up the voltage or whatever makes the lights brighter. What should I do? ipd has Cibie halogen things, AllEuro has Euro headlights (supposedly, couldn't find them), and I know there's probably all kinds of stuff out there I haven't seen. What have you guys done? What has worked well? What is CHEAP but effective? How can I convince my dad to do this instead of just fixing whatever is wrong now?
