I recently aquired a "project car" with a few problems. It's a 1981 240 GLT wagon which runs very well, when it runs. I'm sorting through the "no start" possibilities, but one thing I'm not certain about is if it has the "Hall effect" sensor in the distributor. There are two wires running to the distributor which are, as I recall, brown and green. This is a B21F non-turbo engine. I have the Bentley manual, but it doesn't cover the B21F non-turbo in this car (since it starts with the '83 models).
Next problem: I changed the oil and found that I couldn't get the oil filter off. Very puzzling until I read through the forum here and realized the motor mounts are shot so the engine is resting on the (deformed) oil filter. I think I see how to deal with that, but the third problem is very low oil pressure -- is there any chance the deformed oil filter could be the cause of low oil pressure (as in the oil bypassing the filter somehow)? If not, I'll replace the oil pump at the same time, but that would be nice to avoid if I can.
Finally, I saw a post about replacing the oil pump using a jack under the main engine pulley to lift the engine. That has a certain appeal since I don't have an engine hoist, but is that really safe?
Thanks in advance, all comments and suggestions are welcome!
