How to stop Headlight Relay from Blowing? 700 1985

My headlights recently went on the fritz/acting quite odd. After reading the hugely helpful 700 series FAQ on this site, I have traced it to my headlight relay. Just like others, the plastic around one of the legs of the relay has melted away, and there is discolouration at this leg as well.
I am about to head off to get a new relay, and I am wondering if there is any thing I can do to help prevent this problem from happening again.
One thing that was lacking in the maintenance guide was exactly why this fault occured.
