Fuel Pump Noise After Intank Pump Replacement 200 1981

G'day All!

I've had my main pump making the usual noise on a low fuel level and also stumbling with the low fuel level. I've kept the fuel level up above 1/2 to stop any main pump damage until I had time to change the intank pump (replaced main pump 12 months ago, don't need another dead one!)

Anyway, I found that the intank filter was blocked, but I replaced the filter, pump and rubber hose anyway, I didn't want to do it again. I filled the tank up and all was well.

Today the tank went below 1/2 and the same pump noise started. If it was doing it all the time I'd say the main pump was dead, but only when the tank gets low?
The intank pump is running, I can hear it when I remove the inspection cover.

Would it be possible to have install the intake pump too far down the pickup tube and block the pickup? Or maybe too high up?

What else should I be checking?

Thanks!!!
