Oil is low, then magically high. WHY?? 200 1987

I've noticed this problem a few times over the past few months. I check the oil, and it's dangerously low. I add about a half quart to bring it to about a quarter of the way up the knurled scale on the dipstick. I drive home. I check the oil there. Now it's just over the top of the scale on the dipstick. The car is parked on level ground for all readings. any ideas?
