240 tranny overdrive problems 200 1993

the transmission(automatic) of my 93' 240 dropped into a lower gear and will not shift up. the dashboard light is ON indicating the 4th gear is disengaged and nothing i try will get the tranny to shift. i followed the owers manual and pressed that STUPID little button on the gearshift knob, kicked-down the gas pedal and cursed at the dashboard light very loudly - but nothing works.
there seems to be enough transmission fluid.
